About Us:

COSMOS provides a local source for installation software, updates, and security patches for the more prevalent open source operating systems, primarily the most popular Linux distributions. The service is primarly targeted at campus system and network administrators who run departmental servers and workstations using these operating systems, but it's also available to faculty, staff, and students who manage their personal or office computers.

If you're having difficulty connecting to our service or have a question or suggestion, please email cites-cosmos@illinois.edu. The COSMOS service is intended to be a convenient campus source for selected open source operating systems, but only offers limited support for the operating systems themselves. Where applicable, we've provided links to the official documentation on setting up a distribution's update tools to fetch their updates from a specific server. Should you need help beyond that, please consult the distribution's web site for more documentation.

For more detailed information, please refer to the COSMOS Service Level Definition.

Other Campus Resources:

If another group is already offering campus users a full mirror of a given distribution, COSMOS needn't duplicate their efforts with an identical mirror. In such cases, it's preferable for machines to be configured to use the existing local resources.

Because of the way UIUCnet has been constructed, URHnet users might notice that traffic to NCSA travels through the exit routers and is counted as off-campus traffic by the rate limiting system.
